About Your Instructor

Who is this scruffy monkey?

I discovered yoga in 2015 as a remedy for weightlifting aches and quickly realized it offered far more than physical relief. As my practice deepened, I began connecting with different parts of myself through the poses, each one an exploration of body, mind, and spirit. Growing up immersed in South Asian storytelling, I recognized the names of asanas—Hanuman, Garuda, Nataraja—and realized that yoga and South Asian storytelling are inextricable. By performing yoga, I could live the stories.

I completed my 200 hour teacher training in 2021 and my 500 hour teacher training in 2023. To date, I have taught nearly 1,400 yoga classes. In my classes, I weave South Asian storytelling into the practice. Tadasana, Mountain Pose, for example, is Shiva’s Mount Kailash, Krishna’s Mount Govardhan, and Kshirasagara, which looms over the Ocean of Milk. Through these stories, students embody the lessons and process them somatically, where transformation begins

My greatest wish, my sankulpa, is to extend the Ishvara (Lord Shiva, Supreme Self, Self Sovereignty) I developed through yoga to others. From physical benefits like strength, flexibility, and pain relief, to deeper journeys of self-discovery, presence, and healing, I hope to empower my students to live their own stories through this beautiful practice.

VIRTUAL CLASS FAQS

Are your classes suitable for beginners, or do they require prior yoga experience?

My online yoga classes are for both beginners and experienced yogis! Each series is thoughtfully curated, starting with accessible flows that feature more detailed cueing and a relaxed pace. As the series progresses, flows gradually introduce more challenging poses, with less cueing and a quicker pace. Every series is intentionally designed to guide students step by step, helping them build the strength, flexibility, and confidence to master more advanced poses.

How can students access your live sessions?

Live lessons are on YouTube and will be announced over the mailing list, so be certain to sign up here! They will always be donation based, so feel free to invite your friends. Archived lessons will always be available in the library!

What equipment or props do students need for your classes?

Always recommended are a mat, a towel, and a bottle of water, though yoga can be performed without any accoutrement whatsoever. Students are encouraged to use whatever props are most beneficial for their practice: blocks, straps, etc. If these aren’t available to you, you can always use a hefty book, a scarf, whatever is at hand to help support you in your practice. Yoga is a low-overhead discipline!

Can students access recordings of live sessions if they miss a class?

All classes are recorded and available in the library!

How do I get the playlist for class?

It’s easy! Simply go to Spotify and log in or create an account. Navigate to Burning Tail Yoga’s Spotify profile to find the complete list of playlists.

Remember, every playlist will be in the description of every Live Stream and recording!

"Emelie brings her master story telling into the yoga class, enriching the experience and offering wisdom that flows naturally from spiritual stories. Combining heart opening yoga poses with the story of Hanuman, I left class feeling like I had a unique experience that only Emelie can provide."
